Locals form the foundation of our union. It is the starting point where members go for help, where they meet to discuss workplace concerns, where they elect their Local Executive representatives and where they vote on proposed collective agreements.

PSAC represents over 30,000 members who are affiliated to over 200 locals across the Ontario Region. Locals may be affiliated to a PSAC Component. Components bring together members who work for a government department, agencies or crown corporations, or in similar occupations represented by the Component. Locals that are not part of a Component are known as Directly Chartered Locals. These locals are represented directly through the PSAC because of their unique sector or workplace.

Across the Ontario Region, there are 5 regional offices. These offices are located in TorontoKingstonSudburyThunder Bay and London and provide expertise and support to Local officers and members.

The PSAC is connected to the greater Canadian labour movement through our affiliation to the Canadian Labour Congress and by local affiliations to the Ontario Federation of Labour and district labour councils. On the international level, the PSAC is part of the Public Services International, which serves as a link to other public service unions around the world.

Here are a few resources to help you understand further the roles and responsibilities of Locals:

This Handbook found on the link above is designed to help you carry out your important work by providing you with an overview of our union and information related to your Local Officer role. This Handbook is a guide and one of the many tools that can assist you in your development as a union activist. Your Component (if your Local is represented by a Component) and your PSAC Regional Office can also offer invaluable assistance.

Local Union Survey

PSAC has developed a Local Health Check survey to help Local Officers: (1) Assess your Local and (2) Determine Local development needs  http://goo.gl/forms/aOU5rwwEzQ  Once you complete the survey, contact your PSAC Regional Office and a Regional Representative can review your survey results and offer assistance with your Local's development needs.

Directly Chartered Locals

There are eighteen Directly Chartered Locals, representing a combined total of over 5,000 members across the PSAC Ontario Region. This DCL map illustrates where DCLs are located within the Ontario region, along with the sectors that their members fall within including: (1) academic (2) law enforcement and security (3) gaming (4) health care (5) contracted-out public services and others. PSAC Ontario facilitates learning events to connect Directly Chartered Locals across the region such as Directly Chartered Local Conferences, annual Academic Sector Meetings, First Nations Police Sector meetings as well as other local development initiatives. Contact your PSAC Regional Office to find out more about any upcoming learning events that might be relevant to your Local.
