HUMAN RIGHTS

The Public Service Alliance of Canada unequivocally supports the principles of human rights as proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Canadian Human Rights Act.

PSAC recognizes that there are members who have been and continue to be victimized by discrimination. PSAC pledges to work toward the achievement of equality for all its members and to eliminate discrimination and increase the participation of disadvantaged groups in the workplace and in society.

Human Rights Committees

PSAC has identified 5 equity-seeking groups, including:

  • Aboriginal (First Nations, Inuit and Métis)

  • Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, and Trans

International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia 2016

Observed on May 17th, this day is observed so that we may raise awareness of continuing LGBTQ rights violations, and commemorates the decision to remove homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organization in 1990. “The Declaration of Montreal” created in 2006, called for the United Nations and all states to recognize May 17 as the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. “The Declaration of Montreal”, created in 2006, called upon the United Nations, and all states, to recognize this day. It highlights a number of rights and freedoms and encompasses all aspects of human rights while aiming to ensure the prevention of discrimination against the LGBTQ community.
April 19th – Equal Pay Rally in Toronto

Closing the gender pay gap is the government’s responsibility. Each year the Equal Pay Coalition, of which PSAC is a part of, asks all Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) to sign the MPP Pay Equity Champion Pledge. 
International Day of Pink

Held annually on the second Wednesday, this year, “International Day of Pink” will be celebrated on April 13, 2016. This event was an initiative of two heterosexual High School students in Nova Scotia who saw a gay student being bullied because he was wearing a pink shirt. They decided to buy pink shirts and encouraged everyone at their High School to wear them and stand together in solidarity against bullying.
National Day of Action & Remembrance on Violence Against Women - December 6th

On December 6th, 1989, 14 women were gunned down by Marc Lepine as he chanted “I hate feminists” at Ecole Polytechniques in Montreal. They were murdered because they were women. Sadly this is far from a single event. The harsh reality is that upwards of 300 women and children flee violence every day in Canada and sorrowfully, many do not make it out alive. December 6th is a day for us to band together, to mourn and remember, not only for these 14 women but for all our Sisters who suffer gender-based violence.
INTERNATIONAL TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE – NOVEMBER 20, 2015

This day honours those who have lost their lives by murder or suicide, as a result of transphobia – the hatred or fear of transgender and gender non-conforming persons. Although not every victim may have self-identified as transgender, that is, as a transsexual or otherwise gender-variant, each was a victim based on a bias against members of this group.
Intersex Awareness Day

Intersex awareness encourages us to recognize variations in sexual characteristics that currently exist with persons experiencing the issue of not distinctly identifying with the traditional roles of either male or female while highlighting the many challenges that such persons encounter in their everyday lives. Such challenges may stem from the shame felt due to unwanted sexual cosmetic surgeries endured as intersex children so that they “conform” to traditional gender identities.
Bi Visibility Day

Since 1999, September 23 has been celebrated around the world by members of the bisexual community and their allies to acknowledge bi persons and their contributions to society. Bi Visibility Day was conceived as a response to the prejudice and marginalization felt by bi persons from the heterosexual and broader spectrum of the LGBT communities. Now, this day strives to increase awareness of the issues facing members of this community and provides an opportunity to celebrate their diversity.

Joint Learning Program on Mental Health in the Workplace
