Blue Water Bridge Workers Begin Strike Preparations

Point Edward – The 47 workers represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) who work for Blue Water Bridge will be undergoing strike training on October 11, 2016, to prepare for a possible strike or lockout now that the October 6, 2016 legal deadline has passed. PSAC or the employer can give a 72-hour notice at any time, triggering the countdown for a strike or a lock-out.

“It’s important that we are prepared for the worst case scenario if our employer continues the way they have,” states Paul Haney, Local President. “They are demanding major concessions to benefits, working hours and overtime, discipline, maternity and parental benefits and our pensions.”

The last collective agreement expired on November 7, 2014, and we have been in conciliation to try and negotiate a fair agreement. “The employer is the one that walked away from negotiations, without even considering our proposals, that’s not fair bargaining,” says Sharon DeSousa, PSAC Ontario Regional Executive Vice-President. “We are making sure our members know their rights.”
